According to the UK’s Metro, drinkers downed a record 6.5million litres of lager at this year’s Munich Oktoberfest–but it came at price.
Attendance was down from the previous year, falling to 5.7 million people, partly due to a terrorist scare (Islamic extremists threatened terror attacks if Germany did not remove its armed forces from Afghanistan).
But beer consumption shot up to a record-breaking average of 1.14 litres per person – while hungry festival-goers also managed to consume 111 whole spit roasted oxen. Only 111?
The price was paid, however, by the record 8,608 people who needed medical treatment–800 of whom suffered alcohol poisoning. Sounds about right.
