May 3, 2006 at 8:14 am #8063AnonymousInactiveBeing in college now my dad passed down some drinking tips to me. His hangover prevention is drink 2 glasses of water and stay up for at least a half hour before going to bed. Anytime I am able to remember this or not passed out already I never have a hangover the next day.

Hangovers are terrible little devils. π‘To avoid them (if I know I will probably get one based on the amount I’ve had to drink), I try to drink a good-sized glass of water before heading to bed, along with taking a Mobic pill (Mobic is essentially an super-powered Alleve). If Mobic isn’t available, I substitute it with an Alleve (which is over-the-counter).
If that all doesn’t work, I just tough-it-out…Headache/throwing-up and all.

Lets actually look at what a Hang-over is.
You’ve taken in a large amount of alcohol in a rather short time.
Nothing you do before you go to bed is going to help you, as your liver (if you’ve still got one) is still processing the alcohol when you go to bed.You can eat like a horse that got into the Green’s paddock, that will only bloat you and make any sleep you get difficult, as your stomach digests the food.
You can drink copious amounts of water, this will entail, a lot of trips to the bathroom, again affecting your sleep.
The best thing you can do before you go to bed is drink milk, not a large amount, but enough to put the coating back on your stomach lining that alcohol rips off, from your first drink onwards.
Drinking a large amount of milk (flavoured or not) will give you the shits, because of the calcium content in milk, your body will excrete any excess calcium, by default.
The next day, if you do happen to wake up "under the weather" there is one rule that rings true here, that being DO NOT DRINK COFFEE!!
Caffeine will dehydrate you to buggery, your mouth will be dry and you will want to drink water all day, although you probably will need to drink some water, don’t drink it from a Latte or Coffee cup.
Don’t buy Coke or other fizzy drinks, they will undo all your good work with the milk last night, as in, they will tear the crap out of your already inflamed stomach lining.
If however this is a Sunday or you managed to call in sick at work during the week, Get into your system either a good feed of fish and chips (not sure how prevalent F&C’s are in the US), or light up the BBQ for Steak, Fried Onions and God-knows what else.
Invite your neighbour, he might have beer and you can do it all again!
