For a light beer I always liked Kronenbourg but I haven’t been able to find it here in Texas for a while so I don’t know if it is still even being imported. It has a very balanced, sweetish lightly hoppy character that went really well with the Texas heat and good food. For an English style pub ale I like Fuller’s ESB, I don’t know of many brews that can match the complexity in the aftertaste. I love it, but it is some powerful stuff, watch out! As far as an all out hardcore stout I don’t think anything I have ever tried matches Rasputin Imperial Russian Stout. That stuff makes Guiness Stout taste like Coors Light by comparison. The best cheap beer on the market for something to just keep around for mass consumption by guests is Pearl Light, hands down. 5 bucks a 12 pack down here, 68 calories and it goes down like water. Hey, when it’s 105 in the shade down here in July you don’t want a chocolate stout…
