Pop A Cherry
By Infamous Famous Belly Buddy Mark Higgins

Cherry Wheat
Sam Adams Cherry Wheat is a flowery brew that likes to explore the softer, feminine side of beer. I like to think of beer as a very traditional beverage. I’m certainly not opposed to trying new things, but I always tend to compare what I try to the traditional "beer" flavor. Men always seem to like their drinks straight up, whereas women like their drinks with something in it (fruit) or something missing from it (a worm). Cases of comparison in point: a Cosmopolitan vs. a Sapphire martini, an umbrella vs. a coffee bean, and a shot of something green vs. a shot of something black. What I'm eventually saying is that Sam Adams Cherry Wheat is a beer that caters to the taste of women.

I popped my Cherry during a visit to a friend's house- he had an assortment of orphan beers that weren't consumed at a party leftover in the refrigerator. I did my part to help make some room for the half-gallon of milk that wouldn’t fit because of all the excess.

Half-Dozen Cherry's to go.When I first opened the bottle I did what Jim Koch’s great-grandfather would have done- I took a sniff. It was very aromatic and very sweet smelling. I poured the beer into a cold, frosty glass and was pleased by the golden color and perfect head that formed (and wouldn’t you know it- the bottle cap really does float on the head). As suspected the first sip revealed the sweetness of the beer. The taste was not cherry but more like what a candy manufacturer thinks cherry tastes like; it was a little artificial. But, to this beers' credit, it did a good job blending the flavors. The wheat flavor was nice and not subtle at all; the cherry flavor was not as over-powering as I expected it to be. There was also that hint of spiciness that Sam Adams is known for in its specialty brews. The Cherry Wheat proved to be a pleasant mixture of textures, but the sweetness made it a little prohibitive to drink more than two of these beers (and what’s the use if you’re not drinking more than two beers).

In the end, we made room in the fridge for the milk, and the orange juice, and the steak, and the Gatorade that we will probably need tomorrow. I think that the Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat is a worthy beer for people (read women) who enjoy beer, but need their beer to taste like something else.
