UK– British brewers are testing a self-cooling can which could solve the problem of lukewarm lager. The IC (Instant Cool) Can is undergoing trials and could be on shelves in time for next summer, according to its inventors.
The current design is approximately the same size as a 500ml can and appears virtually the same on the outside. Inside, the IC Can is split in two. Around 300ml of the drink is contained in a cup-shaped chamber in the top two-thirds, which is surrounded by a layer of watery gel. When the bottom third is twisted, a seal is broken which exposes the gel to a drying agent in the bottom half that draws heat from the liquid in the chamber.
Tempra Technology, the US firm behind the can, claims it produces a chilled drink within three minutes which remains cold for up to 45 minutes.
