Why This Umpire Calls Pete Out on Strikes
By Belly Buddy Mark Stevens
At a Glance:
Beer: Pete's Wicked Summer Brew Pros: Easy to find on sale at the end of summer Cons: Bland, gassy, innocuous, dull, lifeless concoction The Bottom Line: Pete's Summer Brew is a ho-hum light golden colored lager beer with a dash of lemon -- a pedestrian beer for average tastes... Recommend: No
Can we talk?
What do you really think about beers that label themselves as "summer brew"? Does it sound enticing? Appetizing? Refreshing?
I never thought so either.
I always figured that such descriptors should be left to the domain of weak-kneed industrial brewers, whose products we know will stink anyway. Yeah. I might have a little bit of pre-conceptions here when it comes to "summer brews". Just a little
I mention this because it explains just why it is that I have never bothered picking up a six of Petes Summer Brew before now. In fact, I honestly had no intention of ever in my life buying, drinking, or reviewing this beer. As a rule of sanity, I stay away from beers labelled "summer brew" or any such similar marketing hocus-pocus nonsense
I could have died a very happy man if I had never let a drop of Petes Summer Brew pass over my tongue, but when I saw a mountain of it at my local Spec's beer warehouse -- piled up to the ceiling, and all of it on sale for $3.99 a six, well, curiosity killed this cat and I broke down and snagged it.
So anyway, let's give it a shot and see if it really lives down to my meager expectations.
A Tall Cool Glass of Pete's Summer Brew... I think a bar mixer glass (the American "pint" glass) is the perfect glass for most American beer styles, but I think a nice straight-sided glass mug is also a good choice for presenting a casual, everyday, no-nonsense brew, so that's what I'll use.
Appearance: Petes Summer Brew pours bright and pale yellow (maybe about 2 or 3 on the SRM scale) with brilliant clarity and a big foamy head with vigorous carbonation. It looks like any ordinary industrial lager sold in a million corner convenience stores.
Aroma:
Very light and subdued with just a trace of lemon and a little bit of the light scent of sweet malt. Theres also a trace of corn in the aroma.
Flavor:
Petes Summer Brew is brewed with pale malt and malted wheat to a starting gravity of 12.2 degrees Plato (about normal gravity with a normal alcohol level of 4.7%). The beer is lightly hopped with Tettnang to a level of 22 IUB, and it contains "natural lemon flavoring". Oh boy!
Sweet and lightly malty like the flavor of most light golden ales. The body is somewhat thin and the faint trace of lemon stays thankfully towards the back of the palate so I can drown it out with a quick follow-up chug. I do get a slight, somewhat peppery hop flavor, but it too is subdued and shows up only as I swallow the beer. I suspect the wheat is used at a very low level because there is little evidence of it in the flavor.
Verdict:
This isn't a bad brew. It's not good, but it's not really bad either.
On the whole, an average run-of-the-mill pale yellow, overly fizzy, dull beer. It's marginally better than a Bud or a Coors, but I can't see giving this much higher than a wholly average rating of 5.
I don't recommend this beer to anybody who really likes beer, but if you're the kind of drinker who just picks up a six of whatever, then this is just as good a whatever as any other whatever you might snag.
Personally, I won't ever waste my time or money on this brew again. Even if it's on sale, I'll just shrug and say, "whatever...."
If you're looking for a refreshing summertime beer, I recommend avoiding anything specifically labelled "summer" anything. Skip that nonsense and head directly to real beers that are naturally refreshing -- like a nice, cool glass of kolsch, or maybe a refreshingly sharp glass of weizen, a lightly malty english brown ale, or even a nicely balanced helles lager. The world is full of truly good light beer styles.
We don't need no steenkin' "summer brew"!
Until next time, see you at the beer warehouse. I'll be the guy staying as far away as possible from that mountain of "summer brew"...

0chubby» used to be one of the best but is now undrinkable. Pete, buy it back and restore the flavor (and the baseball label) 4Paul» no better way to explain it than saying it is "just so-so" 5Chuck Puls» Like he said, not great but not worse than warm PBR. Best thing about drinking it is using the empties for bottling homebrew. 11Desert-Brewer» The best summer beer on the market. It is my favorite beer. The slight lemon taste is refreshing on a hot day. 7mikec» Relative to its normal price - a pretty decent brew. At $6 / 6, I'd score it lower. 8Christian» These reviews looks like the age-old light-lager vs. Ale drinker debate. Can't we all just get along? On hot days I love light cold brews and this one is greatly refreshing! There's no way I can a drink heavy beer on hot days. 3Brian Buru» Boo Hiss! 10Blibora » I happen to like Pete's Summer brew. It tastes great and is very drinkable especially during warm months. So bah!
